At AlerStallings, we help families plan for the needs of loved ones with disabilities. For families with a loved one who has a mental health condition, planning for the future is critical because of the lack of resources and services people with mental health conditions have available to them. AlerStallings applauds the Senate’s passage by a vote of 95-2 of the Mental Health Awareness and Improvement Act (S. 689). The overwhelming support by the Senate of this bill sends a clear message that there is a lack of—and great need for–services for people with mental conditions.
The Act reauthorizes and strengthens programs offered by the Department of Education, and Health and Human Services on mental health conditions, including awareness, prevention, and early identification. Several subsets of programs were reauthorized, such as those dealing with suicide prevention for colleges and universities, support for child trauma centers, and mental health care in schools.
